A few new things

Published: 16 November 2006 | 11 comments

Hello once again everyone. I know things have been slow and quiet on the porch and my humble apologies for that. I won’t bother to bore you with any explanation as to why since I pretty much have the same excuse as the last time this happened. Instead I will focus on a few new things that you may or may not have noticed. So lets start with the obvious, shall we?

Re-design

Yup God’s Porch is now a version 3. I’ve had this design sitting down for about 2 months waiting to see the light of day. The transition is not 100% complete as there are somethings that I would like to change and also some things I might try to add in (not sure yet).

As you might have noticed it’s a lot simpler than the last and a couple things have been done away with, most notably the “Around the Web with God” and “Recommended” sections. They both seemed like a good idea in the last design, however I quickly realized that I couldn’t keep them updated. Maybe they might make a return in the future, but, for now I’ll let them take an extended break.

The “recent posts” list has been left out for now. I’m trying to find a way to work it into the design, so we’ll see how that works out. For now though you will see the last 3 posts on the front page and anything else beyond that date can be found in the “Archives”.

Verse of the Day has been made into a link at the top (right beside the Technorati link and RSS feed link) and providing you have JavaScript enabled it should be loaded into a little window overlayed on the current page you are on. That’s Thickbox magic right there, courtesy of Cody Lindley.

I wanted to try and keep the site as simple and clean as I could, while making it appealing. I think I managed to do it, but I’d love to know what you think. By the way if you notice anything out of place, broken or well…just plain wrong, please let me know.

Textpattern 4.0.4

TXP 4.0.4 was recently released and I just had to upgrade right away. It’s certainly a welcome upgrade and I can definitely agree with Natalie’s thoughts on some of the new features.

While the upgrade went smoothly, my comment form is giving a little trouble. It will post your comment though it gives a “Server Not Found” error and doubles up the URL when you hit submit. Don’t let that stop you from commenting though as your comment will still go through. I am currently trying to get that back up and running with the help of the wonderful TXP community and will post again when I get it all sorted out.

Comments are now working. You can check out the solution via my TXP Forum post.

Other than that, its all good.

What’s next?

Well right now I’m not quite sure. Exams are coming up so I might still be a bit quiet but we will see how things go. I kindly ask for your prayers that I will be able to keep focused and do well this semester and the next.

So that’s pretty much it for now. I will leave you with a verse, but until next time, peace and God bless.

It is the Lord your God you must follow and Him you must revere. Keep his commands and obey Him; serve Him and hold fast to Him. — Deuteronomy 13:4

Looking good Yannick! I really like the new layout. One complaint, I’d love to see permalinks on the titles on the index.php page. Other than that, great job!

Hi Robert, thanks for the suggestion. I’ll be sure to add those in.

Thanks Jim. :)

Hello Yannick,
I could see the changes right away. Niceee:-) I’m keeping a keen eye on this work in progress.

You remain in my prayers.

Blessings,
Marvia

Thanks for sharing your solution to this problem. I had this same problem with my upgrade to TXP 4.0.4., so I reverted back to 4.0.3. until someone else solved the problem for me :) Thanks! Now I should go upgrade too.

Marvia: Thanks for the prayers.

Andy: You are most welcome. Let me know if the solution worked for you.

Yannick. Meant to tell you that I like the site! You should write about more technical stuff now ;)

gravatar Yannick (Author) — 28 November 2006

Thanks Derek. You meant more technical stuff about the re-design or did you mean like articles on CI, PHP, or other web-design related things?

gravatar Derek — 29 November 2006

I guess I meant more technical like CI, PHP and stuff. Your CI article(s) at godbit were awesome.

gravatar Yannick (Author) — 30 November 2006

Oh okay I get you. Yeah I’m thinking about cross posting my articles here also, or at least linking to the ones on Godbit from here.

When I had become a contributor at Godbit I had decided to put any articles to do with web design over there and let God’s Porch focus more on more personal things and posts related to the Word of God. But I suppose it wouldn’t hurt to have the web design articles making an appearance here as well. We’ll see what I eventually decide.

I am hoping to find some more time to write another tutorial using CI though. :)
